A general wave equation for waves over rippled beds

چکیده
A time-dependent extension of the reduced wave equation of Berkhoff is developed for the case of waves propagating over a bed consisting of ripples superimposed on an otherwise slowly varying mean depth which satisfies the mild-slope assumption. The ripples are assumed to have wavelengths on the order of the surface wavelength but amplitudes which scale as a small parameter along with the bottom slope. The theory is verified by showing that it reduces to the case of plane waves propagating over a patch of sinusoidal ripples, which vary in one direction and extend to +a in the transverse direction, studied recently by Davies & Heathershaw and Mei. We then formulate and use coupled parabolic equations to study propagation over patches of arbitrary form in order to study wave reflection.

Intrawave observations of sediment entrainment processes above sand ripples under irregular waves
[1] Measurements of intrawave sediment entrainment processes are reported above ripples under irregular waves generated in a large‐scale flume facility. The data consist of substantive observations of small‐scale processes collected at high spatial and temporal resolution under irregular wave forcing, typical of coastal environments. Acoustic measurements were made of water velocities, bed form...
متن کاملWave-formed sediment ripples: Transient analysis of ripple spectral development
[1] A new method has been developed that models the changes a wave-formed rippled sediment bed undergoes as it is actively evolving between two given equilibrium states due to a change in surface wave conditions. The transient analysis of rippled beds has received very little attention within the literature. Dynamic changes within ripple parameters have implications for the estimation of flow d...
متن کاملInfluences of Heterogeneities and Initial Stresses on the Propagation of Love-Type Waves in a Transversely Isotropic Layer Over an Inhomogeneous Half-Space
In the present paper, we are contemplating the influences of heterogeneities and pre-stresses on the propagation of Love-type waves in an initially stressed heterogeneous transversely isotropic layer of finite thickness lying over an inhomogeneous half space. The material constants and pre-stress have been taken as space dependent and arbitrary functions of depth in the respective media. To sim...
متن کاملDispersion of Love Wave in a Fiber-Reinforced Medium Lying Over a Heterogeneous Half-Space with Rectangular Irregularity
This paper concerned with the dispersion of Love wave in a fiber-reinforced medium lying over a heterogeneous half-space. The heterogeneity is caused by the consideration of quadratic variation in density and directional rigidity of lower half-space. The irregularity has been considered in the form of rectangle at the interface of the fiber-reinforced layer and heterogeneous half-space. The dis...
متن کاملRigidity and Irregularity Effect on Surface Wave Propagation in a Fluid Saturated Porous Layer
The propagation of surface waves in a fluid- saturated porous isotropic layer over a semi-infinite homogeneous elastic medium with an irregularity for free and rigid interfaces have been studied. The rectangular irregularity has been taken in the half-space. The dispersion equation for Love waves is derived by simple mathematical techniques followed by Fourier transformations. It can be seen t...
